This is one of our favourite types of hedge. Often confused with Beech it is native and tough. Easy to clip and forms a really neat hedge. Unlike Beech however Hornbeam does not keep its leaves as well in winter so if you want a deciduous hedge that offers some screening in the winter months go for Beech over Hornbeam.
The best and most economical way to plant a new hedge is to buy and plant between November and March. This is because the plants are dormant and therefore can be supplied either bare root or root balled depending on the variety. By doing this the costs are kept low as there in no pot or additional soil to be supplied or transported.
